“Our bodies, our boundaries, our very possibilities open & close, heal & grow inasmuch as we open to the other—the other we ignore within ourselves and the world ”

I am trained in:

  • Couples and Individual EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy)

  • Attachment theory & Restorative dialogue

  • Integrative trauma work & Narrative healing

  • LGBTQ+, conversion therapy survivors, and transition

  • Global identities, migration, and expats & Intercultural couples

  • Grief and mourning & Spiritual care

Above all, I aim to create a space that feels both courageous and educational—especially for those who have felt unseen in more clinical settings. Whether you're a partner, writer, parent, or professor (or all of the above), I understand what it means to live a layered life. My approach combines literary and contemplative insights with grounded clinical care, inviting you to cultivate deeper self-trust, clarity, and connection. I welcome clients of all orientations, backgrounds, and life paths.

Approach

I’m a trauma-informed psychologist and researcher specializing in the intersections of story, psyche, and philosophy/spirituality, treating individuals with expat adjustment, identity exploration and LGBTQ+, depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, chronic pain or trauma. I further specialize in attachment and couples therapy, and my approach is informed by these same intersections, but with a sense of the intricate dance couples build.

According to EFT and the Gottmans' attachment findings in partnerships, there are often unique, unseen access points, specific to couples themselves, that research-informed guidance can illuminate. I offer couples therapy based on peer-reviewed methodologies to support partners seeking more profound entry, in deepening connection, trust, and understanding. My approach focuses on fostering healing communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening the bond between partners.

My training allows me to meet clients, whether individuals or couples, in their full complexity—intellectually, emotionally, relationally, philosophically, and spiritually. Whether you’re navigating identity, relationship patterns, trauma recovery, or wider existential questions, I offer a research-informed space that is both grounded and expansive.

I draw on a wide range of research modalities and traditions, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), somatic awareness, trauma-sensitive mindfulness and yoga, narrative therapy, and humanistic ethics of care, as well as philosophical/spiritual frameworks. My work is informed by current research in attachment, affect regulation, and the science behind ancient contemplative practices—and also by many years of listening to people’s stories, in classrooms, editorial meetings, on retreat, and in therapy rooms.

My style is warm, curious, empathic, and intuitive. It is co-creative and narrative-based even while applying peer-reviewed research. I tend to work deeply with people who feel "in between": between worlds, roles, relationships, identities, or belief systems. Many of my clients are LGBTQ+ individuals or couples, former members of fundamentalist systems, creatives and academics living with high sensitivity, or caregivers trying to balance personal healing with outer responsibilities. They come to therapy not only to feel better, but to understand themselves more truthfully—and to live with more coherence and connection.

At the heart of my practice is a belief in your (and your partner's) capacity to come home to yourself. I offer a nonjudgmental space for you to explore the things that feel too much, too tender, or too tangled to unpack alone. Together, we’ll work to recognize and loosen old patterns, build emotional clarity, and rediscover your own rhythm and authority. Whether you're recovering from trauma, navigating complex relationships, processing spiritual loss, or simply longing to live more fully in your own truth, I welcome you with respect, presence, and a deep commitment to your healing. I’m not here to “fix” you—but to walk alongside you as you re-member/put gently together who you are and what you need to thrive.

About Erin

I’m an LGBTQ+ Canadian-Dutch Psychologist, expat, lecturer, editor, and award-winning writing coach trained in trauma-informed, attachment-based, humanistic therapy. I work, parent, and lecture in Amsterdam. I love poetry and hiking in nature, and I have OCD and ADHD. I used to have chronic pain as well—recovery and queer parenting are on par as the hardest things I've ever done, and with support, they became a kind of cleansing pain. I believe in (YOUR!) story and I believe in the embodied now. I’m also a poetry/fiction editor, career and expat coach, and the director at the Institute for Embodied Psychology (IIEP), where a part of our proceeds go to LGBTQ+ youth at risk:.

Whether individually or as a couple, you are in crisis, transition, or seeking deeper alignment, I offer grounded, research-based, and compassionate support. YOUR STORY as an individual or as a couple is key to the support I offer. I myself come from a background shaped by both fundamentalist early teachings and queer liberation, and I work compassionately with those exploring identity, or living at the intersection of philosophical or spiritual longing and personal healing. The shadow cast by my own homophobic upbringing is long, and I am still uncertain of myself at times. I am appreciative of and guided by the therapeutic thought of Dr Sue Johnson as well as the Gottmans.

Specializations for Couples & Individuals

Besides 7 years of therapeutic work, I bring over 20 years of experience at the intersection of psychology, pedagogy, and narrative. As the current Director of the International Institute for Embodied Psychotherapy, Associate Fiction Editor at Able Muse, and Subeditor at PANK, I offer a deeply integrative narrative approach that supports individuals, couples, and creatives navigating identity, attachment, and inner life. My early background includes over a decade as a university lecturer as well as extensive work in international student support, LGBTQ+ advocacy and community care. Winner of the CutBank Prize for Poetry, I served as an editor and writing/publishing coach across a range of publications and platforms, helping clients find voice and clarity in both life and work. Whether you're recovering from burnout, processing trauma, exploring purpose, or seeking deep connection, I create space for healing that is relational, reflective, and rooted in your lived experience.
